Send Encrypted Email
Description
This article explains how to send email that is encrypted, or sometimes referred to as secure email. Every user has the ability to protect information sent via DSI email and ensure that information is only read by those intended.
What is Email Encryption:
Encryption is the process by which information is encoded so that only an authorized recipient can decode and consume the information. Basically, encrypted email raises your confidence that the person reading your email and/or attachment is who you intended. Read More
Information
You can encrypt an email in a couple of different ways.
1. Use a keyword in the subject line to let Office 365 know you want this message to be encrypted.
2. Use the permissions options in Outlook.
Feel free to test these out by sending an encrypted email to your own personal account.
"Secure:"
Simply include the word "Secure" with a ":" in your subject line and that email will be sent encrypted. No further tasks necessary. See picture at right.
You can compose the email as normal.
Windows
When composing a new message go to Options and choose Permissions.
Choose Encrypt. This option will encrypt the message without changing any permissions. This option is recommended for most scenarios.
Do Not Forward will disable the option for the recipient to forward.
The DSI - * options are meant for internal communications.
Outlook on the Web
When composing a new message online choose Protect.
By default Outlook chooses Do Not Forward. To encrypt only choose Change Permissions and choose Encrypt.
The Secure: subject line method works online as well.
MACWhen composing a new message choose Options then Permissions
Outlook for Mac does not currently have the Encrypt template available. You can either use the Do Not Forward option (which is still encrypted). Or simply use the Secure: subject line method.
We will update this if/when it becomes available.
